Brothers,
2010 - 2011 Essay Contest
The Knights of Columbus Essay Contest is open to all Catholic students - in public, private or parochial schools - in grades 8, 9, 10, 11 and 12 during the current school year.
The goal of the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest is to give students the opportunity to define the role of a Catholic citizen in a free society, and to strengthen the bond between the Knights of Columbus and local schools.
The theme of the essay contest is "The Responsibility of the Catholic Citizen in a Free Society." The contest opens the doors of young minds, enabling the entrants to be creative, thoughtful and introspective in their work.
The timetable for the contest (which can be adjusted provided the Conference winners are submitted by March 1, 2011) is as follows:
July/August: Councils, assemblies and circles Order Knights of Columbus Essay Contest Kits from the Supreme Council Office.
August/September: Councils, assemblies and circles contact schools to secure cooperation. At this time the date, place and means of recognizing winners should be determined.
September/October: Students write essays. Essays should be submitted to judges by October 30th.
October/November: Judges review essays for council level.
December/January: District Judging if necessary
January/February: Minor Conference Judging.
March: State judging. Each Conference Chairman should send winning essays to the State Coordinator by March 1st, 2011.
The Essay contest is a great way for our councils to get the youth in our communities involved in council activities. I encourage all councils to reach out to schools in their areas. Judging should be done at the council level. Council winners should be submitted to their District Deputy if a District contest will take place. Otherwise, the DD will submit any council winners directly to his Minor Conference Chairman.
All questions regarding the contest can be directed to myself at Ed-Smith@twcny.rr.com.
