| 60th Annual Pilgrimage to Isle LaMotte, VT Photo: 4th Degree Knights of Columbus from throughout Northern New York form an honor guard at the Knight’s annual pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle LaMotte, Vermont. On July 20th Knights of Columbus from throughout Northern New York will conduct their 60th annual pilgrimage to St. Anne’s Shrine in Isle LaMotte, Vermont. Knights of Columbus State Deputy Edward Castellazzi will welcome Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Ogdensburg, who will say the 12:15 p.m. Mass and join the knights and their families for a picnic lunch. At 3:00 p.m. the knights will participate in the Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Dannemora Council 2166 originated the pilgrimage as a council program in 1949. Interest in the day of prayer and fellowship gradually spread to neighboring councils. By 1959 the pilgrimage was being sponsored by the New York State Council. During the pilgrimage’s early years knights from several communities formed a caravan of cars that crossed the bridge to Vermont in a line that stretched for miles. People were attracted by a devotion to St. Anne, by the Masses and wonderful music and by the Shrine’s beautiful setting on the shores of Lake Champlain. Dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of Mary, the Shrine’s religious history dates to 1666 when the French erected a fort and chapel on the site. The chapel was blessed in 1893 and a beautiful statue of St. Anne was erected. Later in 1893 nearly 2,000 people attended the Shrine’s first organized pilgrimage with several people traveling to the pilgrimage by steamboat. Today, several people still travel to the Shrine by boat. Visitors can enjoy a lunch on the beautiful grounds or eat in the Shrine’s modern cafeteria. For more information please call Pilgrimage Coordinator Peter Keenan at 518-643-9241. Release by John Ryan. 6/08 |
